We need your devices! Demand has outpaced supply for our Laptops for Schools scheme

Jul 2026 • 5 min read

A row of laptops.

Since 2020, we have donated thousands of refurbished laptops and PCs to schools, charities and community organisations through our Laptops for Schools scheme.

However, with growing demand from schools and support organisations, we need more businesses to donate unwanted devices to help us expand the programme and support the great number of organisations on the waiting list currently in need of equipment nationwide.

Harris Academy receives Laptops for Schools donation.

Originally launched during the pandemic to address the widespread lack of access to digital devices for remote learning, we refurbish donated corporate hardware and distribute it free of charge to organisations across the UK.

The programme has evolved from relying on public donations to sourcing the majority of devices through corporate clients, particularly businesses reaching the end of three-year hardware lease cycles or upgrading IT equipment. This approach helps ensure devices are suitable for modern operating systems.

We fully self-fund the initiative and refurbishment process, including free data wiping and certified data destruction for donating businesses – a service typically valued at around £50 per device. To help keep the initiative sustainable, we ask businesses to arrange delivery of donated devices to our premises where possible, helping organisations still achieve an overall saving on data destruction costs.

Alongside its social impact, the initiative delivers measurable environmental benefits. By extending the life of so many devices, we estimate it has prevented around 2 tonnes of electronic waste from entering landfill. This helps reduce the release of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which can pose long-term environmental risks if improperly disposed of.

The reuse of existing hardware also reduces the energy demand associated with manufacturing new devices, with estimated savings equivalent to powering three to four homes for a year.
