Working at ITVET: A conversation with SEO Manager, Jacqui Reed

Feb 2024 • 5 min read

In the first of a new series, we want to take you behind the scenes at ITVET and showcase some of the fantastic people who make ITVET the company it is.  Over the coming months, we’ll be meeting teammates from across the company, who work in a variety of roles.

First up is our SEO Manager Jacqui Reed. Jacqui lives with her husband and daughter in Troon, Scotland, and is part of the marketing team.  She joined ITVET back in 2021.

As SEO Manager, Jacqui is responsible for making sure the ITVET website and content perform well online and drive visitors and potential clients to the site.

In the marketing team, no two days are the same, but Jacqui gives us an insight into her role and why she loves working at ITVET.

What do you do as an SEO Manager?

SEO, or search engine optimisation, focuses on enhancing website visibility on search engines such as Google. The ultimate objective is to increase organic traffic by producing and optimising high-quality content that meets the needs of users.

It’s a varied role where no two days are the same. One day I might be cursing Google, trying to figure out an indexing issue, and the next day writing a 2000-word article about cyber security.

And why is SEO so important?

Every day, billions of Google users search for information and products, making search engines a major traffic source for websites. To tap into this potential, the goal is to appear in the top search results for your chosen keywords.

It’s simple—the higher you rank, the more visitors your page attracts. The number 1 result is 10 times more likely to get a click than the 10th, and the top three results capture over 50% of all clicks.

This is where SEO comes in, playing a crucial role in boosting rankings. Improved rankings mean more traffic, translating to new customers and increased brand awareness. Ignoring SEO leaves one of the most vital traffic channels open to competitors.

Why did you opt for a career in SEO?

I didn’t plan to work in SEO. I was just lucky enough to fall into it. When I left university, I needed a job. I applied for literally everything! I even had an interview for a journalist position at a local newspaper.

One of my first roles was as an SEO content writer at a Glasgow agency where I reviewed online bingo and slot games. Not exactly glamorous but I had far too much fun writing puns all day long!

I then moved to another agency where I was a generalist digital marketer. This is where a lot of SEOs start before they go down the specialist route. It’s good to get an understanding of all aspects of the digital marketing mix and how they all come together.

As I got older and wiser I discovered what I liked and didn’t like, what I was good at and what I was not so good at. That’s when I realised SEO was totally my bag, so I made the decision to specialise as an SEO all-rounder, and I’ve never looked back.

What do you love most about your role at ITVET, and why is ITVET a great company to work for?

I’m clearly a glutton for punishment – kidding! I love my role at ITVET because it’s diverse – no two days are the same, so there’s never a dull moment! There are always new projects and challenges to jump on and the content machine never stops! I also need to mention my pals in the marketing team here. It’s amazing to work with such a great bunch of talented and inspiring people who share my love for 3pm sweet treats. We are the dream team!

ITVET is an amazing company to work for. I came to ITVET from a large, global software company and all they cared about was their stakeholders. ITVET is different. Hand on heart, they truly care about their employees and giving back to the community. It’s not just a box-ticking PR exercise. I think all the new employee benefits that have been announced recently prove that.

What do you like to do outside of your role at ITVET?

I’m a mum to a 9-month-old baby girl, Freya. At the weekend we enjoy dancing along to dad’s synths, learning new skills and lots of walks along the beach. I also cook a decent curry whenever I get a chance and love a nice bottle of red wine.

What would you say to someone who is considering applying for a role at ITVET?

Do it!
